APPLECROSS closed out the regular season in the A-Grade Women’s competition for 2020 by winning all 10 matches after a win on Saturday against Triton which in turn allowed the Melville Marlins to stay in second position.
Round 10 of the Women’s A-Grade competition took place on Saturday afternoon beginning at HBF Stadium with the Melville Marlins guaranteeing themselves second position heading into the semi finals with a 12-5 victory against UWA City Beach.
The other match of the round took place at Bicton Pool and Applecross was able to complete their perfect regular season with an 11-5 victory against Triton.
The Round 10 results mean that the standings finish up with Applecross on top of the table with a perfect 10-0 record. The Melville Marlins finished second with five wins, a draw and four losses while Triton were only just behind with four wins and six defeats.
UWA City Beach then ended up with a draw and nine losses from their 10 appearances.
That all sets the stage for the next two Saturday afternoons of finals action to determine the 2020 premiership in the Women’s A-Grade competition.
That begins with the semi-final action this Saturday with the two winners of the matches going through to the following week’s Grand Final with the losers to vie for third and fourth position.
The first match up pits the first placed undefeated Applecross against the fourth placed winless UWA City Beach at HBF Stadium’s Outdoor Pool from 3.45pm.
Then it shapes as a tantalising match up in the second against third semi-final which takes place at Bicton Pool from 4pm with the Melville Marlins playing Triton.
But the Round 10 action got underway on Saturday afternoon at HBF Stadium with the Melville Marlins taking on UWA City Beach.
It was a good start from both teams with scores locked away at 3-3 by quarter-time, but the Marlins began to pull away in the second quarter with the only three goals courtesy of Brooke Pensini, Sofie Pontre and Abbey Grosse.
That saw Melville lead 6-3 by half-time which became 9-3 by three quarter-time following three more goals from Grosse, Luci Marsh and Megan Cranley.
UWA did manage to score twice in the last quarter through Bec Liddle and Pippa Pedley, but the Marlins also added another three to take out the 12-5 victory.
Chloe Nella and Sofie Pontre scored three goals apiece for the Marlins with Abbey Grosse and Luci Marsh adding two of their own. Pippa Pedley scored two of the five goals for UWA.
Marlins goalkeeper Lilian Hedges received the three votes while Bec Liddle got the two and Sofie Pontre one.
The other game then took place at Bicton Pool with Applecross facing Triton.
Applecross completed their undefeated season with the 11-5 victory with Zoe Arancini hitting another four goals, Glencora McGhie three and Kelly Parks three. Hannah Nelson and Tilly Connor hit two goals each for Triton.
