Dominant AWL Round 6 for WA teams against Adelaide

THE Fremantle and UWA Torpedoes teams in the OVO Australian Water Polo League came away with seven wins and a draw from the eight combined women’s and men’s Round 6 games against the Adelaide Jets last weekend.

It was a successful weekend for both West Australian clubs up against the Jets who had a tough time of things on the trip to Perth for the four games in four days for their women and men respectively.

Things got underway at UWA Aquatic Centre on Thursday night with the Torpedoes women beating the Jets 15-4 and the men then playing out an 8-8 draw following a penalty shootout where they couldn’t be separated.

Pippa Pedley ended up with three goals for the Torpedoes women, Cathryn Earl two, Alyssa Diacono two and Glenda Morgan two. Jessica Martin scored twice for the Jets.

It was a second straight penalty shootout for the UWA men and again the visitors went first with Daniel Hall having his shot saved by Damian Williams, who had a stunning night in the cage for the Torpedoes.

Ford then scored for the Torpedoes. Will Dayman scored for Adelaide and Henry Brown put the Torpedoes up in the shootout 2-1.

Fraser Woods then missed for Adelaide to put the home team well on top but Tom Powell couldn’t convert. Nic Jordan then did score for the Jets and when Tom Beare missed, it was 2-2 with a shot left each. Stefan Porobic scored for Adelaide as did Nick Hughes for UWA and the game finished all square at 8-8.

Then it was to Bicton Pool on Friday night with the Fremantle Marlins winning the women’s clash over the Jets 10-1 before the Mariners beat Adelaide 17-6.

Starting with the women’s game, Erin Redbond scored three times for the Marlins, Madeleine Quinn two and Chloe Nella two. Jessica Martin scored Adelaide’s only goal.

Then in the men’s match, Nick Elphick hit five goals for the Mariners, Petar Tomasevic four, Joel Swift three and James Fannon two. Jesse Taylor did score twice for the Jets.

It was back to UWA Aquatic Centre on Saturday night with the Torpedoes women defeating the Jets 15-4 and then the UWA men backing up defeating Adelaide 11-8.

Canadian import Jakie Kohli scored four goals for the Torpedoes women with Cathryn Earl adding two and Claire Whitaker two. Jessica Martin scored another two for the Jets.

Andrew Ford scored four goals for the UWA men, Tim Putt two and Drew Lilleyman two. Stefan Porobic finished with three goals for the Jets, Fraser Woods two and Daniel Hall two.

Things finished up on Sunday back at Bicton Pool with the Marlins women beating the Jets 16-5 and the Mariners men defeated Adelaide 15-6.

The women’s contest on Sunday morning saw Erin Redbond score six more goals for Fremantle, Madeleine Quinn three, Pia Rodgers two and Sofia Chaves two. Jessica Martin hit another two for Adelaide.

Nick Elphick then managed another three goals in the men’s encounter for Fremantle with Joel Swift also scoring three, Davis Verboon three, Luca Altieri two and Tom Prior two. Daniel Hall and Will Dayman scored twice each for the Jets.

It’s another trip west for an interstate visitor too in Round 7 of the OVO Australian Water Polo League, this time the Sydney Uni Lions.

Fremantle is up first hosting Sydney Uni at Bicton Pool on Thursday night with the Marlins playing the Lions in the women’s game from 7pm and the Mariners taking on Sydney Uni from 8.30pm in the men’s game.

It’s the Torpedoes turn on Friday night at UWA Aquatic Centre again with the women’s game underway from 7pm and the men’s from 8.30pm.

Then on Saturday night it’s back to Bicton Pool with Fremantle hosting Sydney Uni with the women’s match at 7pm and then men’s from 8.30pm.

Lastly on Sunday it’s back to UWA Aquatic Centre with the Torpedoes hosting the Lions with the women’s game underway from 10am and the men’s from 11.30am.
