Mixed weekend in AWL against Drummoyne for WA teams

THE Drummoyne Devils became the first interstate team to take on Fremantle and the UWA Torpedoes in the OVO Australian Water Polo League this season in Perth and it proved to be a fascinating Round 5 of action across the four days.

The results of the round with the West Australian teams against Drummoyne saw the Fremantle Marlins win on Thursday but lose on Saturday while the Mariners lost on Thursday night but won on Saturday.

The Torpedoes lost all four games against the Devils across Friday night and Sunday at UWA Aquatic Centre.

The results leave the Fremantle Marlins fourth on the 2018 OVO AWL women’s standings after five rounds with five wins, a draw and four losses. The Torpedoes sit second last with a win, a draw and eight losses.

The Fremantle Mariners are third in the men’s competition with an 8-2 record while the Torpedoes sit 10th at 1-9.

It got underway at Bicton Pool on Thursday night with the women’s contest ending in a penalty shootout with the Fremantle Marlins winning that with four shots to two to take the overall 10-8 victory over Drummoyne.

Lara Zimmerman finished with three goals for the Marlins, Madeleine Quinn two, Zoe Arancini two and Pia Rodgers two. Breanna Appel hit three goals for Drummoyne, Morgan Baxter two and Colleen O’Donnell two.

Then in the men’s match to follow, Drummoyne handed the Fremantle Mariners just their second loss of the season winning 10-6.

James Fannon and Nick Redbond scored twice each for the Mariners while Mitch Emery scored three goals for Drummoyne, Tyler Martin three and Connor Stapleton three.

The action moved to the UWA Aquatic Centre on Friday night for two tight contests. It started with the women’s game with Drummoyne taking out the 9-7 victory.

Alyssa Diacono finished with two goals for the Torpedoes. Emma Jones scored three for Drummoyne, Elle Armit two, Morgan Baxter two and Jayde Appel two.

Then in the men’s contest, the Devils also prevailed beating the Torpedoes 8-6.

Tim Putt and Kevin Oliveira scored two goals each for UWA. Tyler Martin finished with three for Drummoyne, Mitch Emery two and Connor Stapleton two.

It was back to Bicton Pool on Saturday night and this time it was the blowout of the round with Drummoyne beating the Fremantle Marlins 9-4.

Elle Armit finished with three goals for Drummoyne and Colleen O’Donnell two. Zoe Arancini, Pia Rodgers, Madeleine Quinn and Erin Redbond scored for Fremantle.

But the Mariners bounced back from the loss the night before to win impressive 14-8 in the men’s clash that was to follow at Bicton Pool.

Rio Olympian Joel Swift hit four goals for the Mariners, Nick Redbond three and Tom Prior two. Tyler Martin scored six goals for Drummoyne and Chandler Jarrels two.

The round concluded on Sunday back at UWA Aquatic Centre and it was the Devils who scored the last goal in the women’s contest to beat the Torpedoes 9-8.

Michelle Martinelli scored three goals for the Torpedoes and Claire Whitaker two from the five-metre penalty spot. Elle Armit scored three goals for Drummoyne, Morgan Baxter two and Jayde Appel two.

The men’s clash then ended up going to penalties after the Torpedoes led 4-2. But the Devils scored the last two goals of regular time and then hit all five of their penalties with UWA nailing just two for Drummoyne to take out the eventual 9-6 victory.

The Devils shot first and Tyler Martin, James Smith, Samuele Avallone, Mitch Emery and Chandler Jarrels all scored from five metres. Only Tom Beare and Tim Putt made their shots for the Torpedoes with Lach Pethick, Kevin Oliveira and Nick Hughes unable to score as Drummoyne won 9-6.

Tim Putt finished the game with two goals and a penalty for the Torpedoes.

It’s the Adelaide Jets’ turn to make the trip west in Round 6 with games against the UWA Torpedoes at UWA Aquatic Centre on Thursday and Saturday nights while playing the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners on Thursday night and Sunday.
