
THE South Fremantle Bloods in the Fremantle Conference and Triton in the UWA Conference scored super impressive Round 2 Men’s Premier League victories on Saturday to emerge as teams to beat.
It was just the second round of the new-look 2017-18 Premier League season with the eight teams separated into two conferences.
Round 2 action in the Fremantle Conference at Bicton Pool on Saturday saw Dolphins defeat the Port Colts 10-5 before the South Fremantle Bloods beat the Melville Sharks 9-5.
And in the UWA Conference at HBF Stadium, Triton defeated City Beach 13-4 and in the battle of two UWA City Beach teams, the Rangers beat Flotsam 11-6.
It is two Olympians that are leading the way scoring after two rounds in the Men’s Premier League season with German powerhouse Florian Naroska having scored nine goals for Triton. Australia’s Rio Olympian Joel Swift has scored eight goals for the Melville Sharks.
Another star veteran Brett McGhie has scored six goals for Triton with Will McKay having hit four for the South Fremantle Bloods as well.
Taz Williams (Flotsam), Tom Powell (Rangers), Tim Putt (Rangers), Lach Pethick (Rangers), Andras Jo-Kovacs (Dolphins), James Fannon (Sharks) and Alex Bogunovich (Flotsam) have all scored four goals apiece.
Starting with the two Fremantle Conference games at Bicton Pool on Saturday, Dolphins took on Port Colts with both teams searching for their first wins of the new season.
Dolphins scored first courtesy of Peter Gaunt before Port Colts got on the board through Davis Verboon. Dolphins then went into quarter-time leading 2-1 after a goal from Jeremy Carbone.
Two goals in the opening three minutes of the second quarter for the Dolphins to Tom Beare and Gaunt saw them lead 4-1 but Port Colts finished the half strongly to cut that deficit to 5-4 by half-time.
Scores were then tied when Port Colts scored first in the second half from Tom Prior. But that would be their last score of the game with Dolphins scoring the last goal of the third term and the only four of the last to win 10-5.
Andras Jo-Kovacs finished with three goals for Dolphins, Peter Gaunt two and Jeremy Carbone two. Davis Verboon scored twice for Port Colts.
Dolphins ‘keeper Marko Draksimovic got the three votes, Tom Beare from Dolphins the two and Aaron Oughtibridge from Port Colts the one.
It was then time for the Round 1 winners South Fremantle and Melville to lock horns. It was the Bloods who started strongly with the first three goals in the first quarter from Petar Tomasevic, Will McKay and Hamish Blair.
The Sharks scored the first two goals of the second period through Jack Marshall and Joel Swift but the Bloods still managed to lead 5-3 at half-time.
However, by three quarter-time scores were tied at 5-5 following two more Melville goals to Swift.
The game was on the line heading into the last quarter but it was dominated by South Fremantle with goals to McKay, Tomasevic, McKay again and Nick Elphick to win 9-5.
Will McKay scored four goals for the Bloods, Nick Elphick to and Petar Tomasevic two. Joel Swift scored three goals for the Sharks.
McKay was given three votes, Swift two and South Fremantle goalkeeper Ed Slade one.
And in the UWA Conference, Triton looked to remain undefeated up against City Beach with Triton making the flying start to lead 4-1 by quarter-time with Florian Naroska making his mark early with three goals.
By the time there was a minute left in the first half, Triton led 7-1. That had become 12-4 by three quarter-time and then Triton scored the only goal of the fourth quarter through Brett McGhie to secure the 13-4 victory.
Florian Naroska scored seven goals for Triton and Brett McGhie four. Matt Murphy scored twice for City Beach.
Naroska was awarded the three votes, McGhie the two and City Beach goalkeeper Toby White the one.
Then it was time for two UWA City Beach teams to battle it out with Flotsam facing Rangers. The Rangers made their mark early with the only four goals of the first quarter through Will Lantzke, Lach Pethick, Tim Putt and Tom Powell.
Flotsam got their first goal to open the second term through Taz Williams. Then after a reply for Rangers to Putt, Flotsam got a second before half-time from Williams again.
Rangers put the game out of reach with four goals in the first six minutes of the third period with Pethick, Powell, Pethick again and Lantzke scoring to make the lead 9-2.
Flotsam finished strongly with four of the game’s last six goals but Rangers still won 11-6.
Lach Pethick scored four goals for Rangers, Tim Putt three, Tom Powell two and Will Lantzke two. Taz Williams scored three times for Flotsam and Alex Bogunovich two.
Pethick was awarded the three votes and Putt two while Flotsam’s Williams received the one.
Round 3 of the Men’s Premier League will see in the Fremantle Conference, Dolphins play the South Fremantle Bloods at 1pm with the Melville Sharks facing Port Colts at 2.15pm.
And in the UWA Conference, Rangers plays City Beach at 1pm at HBF Stadium and Triton takes on Flotsam at 2.30pm.
