THE Women’s Premier League semi-finals for the 2016-17 season take place this Saturday at HBF Stadium with the spots in next week’s grand final up for grabs.
The two semi finals will take place at the HBF Stadium outdoor pool on Saturday afternoon.
The action will get underway at 1.30pm with the UWA City Beach Bears playing Triton. The winner will be straight into the grand final.
The second semi-final will then begin at 3pm with the Melville Marlins playing the Phil Johnson Plumbing & Gas North Coast Phoenix.
The Marlins have been the dominant team in the 2016-17 Women’s Premier League season going through undefeated winning all 11 games. Their only loss against their name was due to a forfeit.
The Bears, meanwhile, went through the season winning eight games and losing four. Triton went through with six wins and six losses, and North five wins and seven losses.
The Lawley’s Bakery Dolphins were the only team to miss the finals having gone through the 2016-17 unable to record a victory.
A big part of this Saturday’s semi finals could very well be which National Water Polo League players will be made available to play for the UWA City Beach Bears and Melville Marlins respectively.
The UWA Torpedoes will be playing the Brisbane Barracudas on Saturday night but the 1.30pm start could still allow several of those players to line up for the Bears against Triton.
Meanwhile, the Fremantle Marlins will be playing the Barracudas on Friday night and Sunday this week, so a host of those players should be free for the semi-final against the Phoenix.
If one, or both, of the Bears and Marlins happen to make the grand final, they should be at full strength as well with the NWPL derby next week to take place at UWA on Friday night with the grand final in the Premier League to take place on the Saturday.
Just as a refresher, the Men’s Premier League season concluded back in December with the UWA City Beach Bears defeating the Melville Sharks in the grand final at Bicton Pool.
The Men’s Challenge Cup has been taking place since then so far in 2017. The final round will take place this Saturday at Claremont Pool.
Dolphins are already booked in next Saturday’s grand final with this week’s results to determine who they face out of Phantoms or Triton.
This Saturday’s fixtures see the Pressed Earth Dolphins play Triton at 3pm at Claremont Pool. Then at 4.30pm, Phantoms take on the Barbarians.
The Dolphins have been the dominant team throughout the Challenge Cup season winning all seven matches.
Triton and Phantoms, though, remain locked in a battle over that second grand final spot.
The Barbarians have won two games but can’t make the grand final no matter the results on Saturday.
