Women’s A-Grade wrap after five rounds

AHEAD of the bye this weekend for the Water Polo WA A-Grade competition, there have been five rounds of competition already with Melville’s Applecross team so far undefeated with superstar Zoe Arancini so far leading the way.

It has been a year in 2020 like no other thanks to COVID-19 but it’s a great credit to all involved that the A-Grade competition has been able to get up and running per schedule for the 2020/21 season.

While it might be strange to have the football codes still being played while the water polo action is underway, we are now five rounds into the A-Grade season and we have been some tremendous contests around the pools in Perth.

After five rounds of the season with a bye this weekend to give everyone a chance to take a deep breath, Applecross is out on top of the standings with a perfect 5-0 record.

Then there is fellow Melville team, the Marlins, who have won three matches and lost three over the opening five rounds with Triton sitting on a 2-3 record while UWA City Beach is so far winless after the five matches.

Following the five rounds of action, it’s Applecross and Fremantle Marlins superstar Zoe Arancini who is the competition’s leading goal scorer with 19 matches from the five matches.

Next up is Glencora McGhie also from Applecross who has hit 13 goals while Madeleine Quinn from the Marlins and Dayna O’Leary from Triton with the 10 goals apiece so far.

Kelly Parks from Applecross, Jess Zimmerman her teammate and Bec Liddle from UWA City Beach have found the inside of the net on 10 occasions so far this season while Luci Marsh from the Marlins has scored nine goals as well.

The season got underway back on Saturday September 12 with Applecross beating the Marlins 9-5 in the battle of the Melville teams at Bicton Pool. Zoe Arancini and Jess Zimmerman scored twice each for Applecross in the win with Sarah Leavy hitting three goals for the Marlins.

The other Round 1 match up saw Triton defeat UWA City Beach 7-3 at Beatty Park with Dayna O’Leary scoring four times for Triton. Bec Liddle scored two of the three goals for UWA.

The Round 2 action saw UWA City Beach play host at HBF Stadium but it was the Melville Marlins winning 7-5 with three goals apiece from Chloe Nella and Madeleine Quinn. Liddle scored another three goals as well for UWA.

Applecross then put in a high-scoring showing to defeat Triton 17-11 at Bicton Pool with four goals each to Glencora McGhie and Arancini, and three apiece to Jess Zimmerman and Kelly Parks. O’Leary finished with three goals for Triton.

Round 3 also got underway at HBF Stadium and this time it was a big win for the undefeated Applecross, beating UWA City Beach 16-2. McGhie finished with seven goals for Applecross and Arancini six while Liddle and Glenda Morgan scored for UWA.

The Marlins also won a tight battle 9-6 against Triton at Bicton Pool on the back of five goals from Luci Marsh and three from Quinn. O’Leary and Tia Nelson scored twice each for Triton.

Round 4 also began at HBF Stadium and this time it was Triton coming away with the 15-7 victory against UWA City Beach. Olivia Mackell scored four goals for Triton, Emma Putt three, Cathryn Earl two and O’Leary two.

Rebecca Gibb, Liddle and Harper Phillips finished up with two goals apiece for UWA City Beach.

It was a strongly competitive battle between the two Melville teams at Bicton Pool with Applecross ending up prevailing 9-6 against the Marlins.

Arancini and Jess Zimmerman scored thee goals each for the winners with two goals apiece coming for the Marlins from Quinn and Sofia Chaves.

Round 5 then saw both matches take place at Beatty Park starting with Applecross defeating Triton 16-6. Arancini and Parks finished with four goals apiece for Applecross while Lara Zimmerman added three goals and Jess Zimmerman two. Earl finished with three goals for Triton.

The Marlins then scored their third win from five attempts defeating UWA City Beach 11-6. Chaves scored four times for the Marlins, Marsh three and Quinn two. Pippa Pedley hit three goals for UWA and Liddle two.

The season resumes with Round 6 on Saturday October 31 with two games at Bicton Pool with the Melville Marlins playing Triton, and Applecross taking on UWA City Beach.
