Western Australia’s Ord Minnett Stingers captain and Olympian, Zoe Arancini, has officially announced her retirement, closing the chapter on an extraordinary 16-year elite career and leaving a powerful legacy for water polo in WA and across the nation.
A three-time Olympian and Paris 2024 silver medallist, Zoe shared the news following Saturday evening’s match here in Perth between the Stingers and USA and was surrounded by teammates, family, and members of the water polo community who have supported her since the very beginning.
Her career began at a young age with Melville Water Polo Club before joining the Fremantle Marlins, and from there, she rose to become a driving force in the Australian Stingers national team. Since her debut in 2009, Zoe has represented Australia at three Olympic Games and seven FINA World Championships.
Known for her fierce leadership, relentless work ethic, and dedication to the game, Zoe’s impact extended far beyond the pool.
“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved. I feel really at peace with the decision, and I’m so excited for the next generation to step in,” said Arancini.
“My debut for the Stingers back in 2009 was pretty special after all that hard work. Winning silver at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona was huge, especially after missing out on the London Olympics. Then being selected for Rio was a dream come true, and to captain the team to silver in Paris, that’s something I’ll carry with me forever.”
“Thank you so much to the water polo community. It’s been a crazy ride, so many incredible memories and of course some tough moments too, they’ve been some of the best experiences of my life.”
Beyond the medals and accolades, Zoe has been a passionate mentor, advocate, and role model, especially for young female athletes in Western Australia.
Among her many achievements, she was selected in the World All Starts team in 2015, a SportWest Sports Star of the Year award finalist and recently named Water Polo WA’s Senior Player of the Year. Yet, it’s her leadership, humility, and generosity that have left the deepest impression.
As she steps away from the elite stage, Zoes shared three pieces of advice for the next generation of players:
- “Always give it your best. You never know what will happen, but no matter the outcome, you’ll always know you gave it your all”
- “Remain coachable. You’ll have different coaches throughout your journey, each offering new insights that can help you grow”
- “Lastly, have fun. It’s the reason I got involved and why I kept playing, and will keep playing. It is because I really enjoy the sport and have made incredible friendships along the way”.
Zoe may be closing the book on her elite playing career, but her impact will be felt for years to come, both in and out of the water.
Lorraine Donachie, CEO of Water Polo WA, said: “Zoe has had an outstanding career filled with incredible achievements, and she continues to inspire our younger players every day. She shows what’s possible. On behalf of the WA water polo community, thank you, Zoe and we wish you all the best for this next chapter.”
