The City Beach Bears and Melville Sharks moved further ahead on top of the Water Polo WA Men’s Premier League after wins in Saturday’s Round 7 action while the Dolphins closed in on third position.
The three matches in Round 7 on Saturday saw the Melville Sharks beat Triton 12-7 at Beatty Park, the Pressed Earth Dolphins defeat the Phantoms Skulls 14-8 at Claremont Pool and the City Beach Bears down the Melville Saints 20-2 at Bicton Pool.
After seven rounds of the 2015-16 season, the City Beach Bears sit out on top of the standings with a perfect 7-0 record and a positive goal differential of 79.
The Melville Sharks have improved to a 6-1 record in second position and a goal differential of 38. The Melville Saints (3-3, one draw) are third ahead of the Pressed Earth Dolphins (2-4, one draw), Phantoms Skulls (2-5) and Triton (0-7).
Milos Vukicevic from the City Beach Bears is the Men’s Premier League leading scorer so far this season with 19 goals from five matches.
Nick O’Halloran from the Phantoms Skulls has scored 18 goals ahead of Alex Bogunovich (City Beach Bears) 16, James Fannon (Melville Sharks) 16, Jayden Smith (Melville Sharks) 13, Nicholas Elphick (Melville Saints) 10, Gabriel Tebar (Triton) 10, Jed Thompson (City Beach Bears) nine and Reg Burrows (Melville Sharks) nine.
The round began with Triton taking on the Melville Sharks at Beatty Park and despite the home team scoring first courtesy of Gabriel Tebar, the Sharks scored the next five goals either side of quarter-time through Jayden Smith, Nicholas Redmond, Jordan Kremers-Taylor, Will MacKay and Winton Huck.
Melville ended up leading 8-3 at half-time before Triton close the gap to three early in the third quarter after goals to Bruno Barna and Brett McGhie, but that’s as close as they got with the Sharks scoring four of the last six goals to win by five.
Smith scored three goals for the Sharks while Kremers-Taylor and Huck added two each. McGhie scored three times for Triton and Peter Perry twice.
The Dolphins took on the Phantoms Skulls at Claremont Pool with the only goal of the first period coming to the Dolphins courtesy of Harry Paterson.
The Dolphins then went on to score the first three goals of the second quarter Chris Vang, Tom Beare and Peter Gaunt to see them open up a 4-0 lead before the Skulls got on the board with a goal to Alex Brogan.
The Dolphins led 5-1 at half-time, though, following another goal to Vang and their lead grew to 8-1 during the third quarter following scores to Jeremy Carbone, Vang and Lachlan Mackenzie.
The Phantoms Skulls outscored the Dolphins 7-6 for the rest of the contest but the Dolphins still came away with the six-goal victory with Paterson scoring four goals, Vang three and Carbone two. Nick O’Halloran scored four goals for the Skulls, Brogan two and Kieran Bayles two.
The round concluded with the Bears hosting the Saints at Bicton Pool, and the unbeaten City Beach again proved too good winning by 18.
The Bears scored the only 10 goals of the first half before the Saints managed a goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters, but City Beach still scored 10 more themselves to score the commanding win.
Milos Vukicevic and Florian Naroska scored four goals each for the Bears with Nick Hughes adding three, Mateu Diaz Brana three and Alex Bogunovich. Davis Verboon and Alexander Gunnell were the lone goal scorers for the Saints.
