Round 19 Women’s Premier League Wrap
By Chris Pike
Beatty Park played host to both Water Polo WA Women’s Premier League matches on Saturday and nothing could separate the four teams involved with the league-leading Melville Marlins sitting out with the bye.
First up was the Phil Johnson Plumbing and Gas North Coast Phoenix up against the Lawley’s Bakery Dolphins, and they played out a 10-10 draw.
It was then an 8-8 draw to close Round 19 between Triton and the City Beach Bears.
With one round of the Women’s Premier League season to go, the final ladder positions are all set with the Melville Marlins to finish on top. They currently hold a 13-2 record.
The City Beach Bears (8-5, two draws) will remain second, the Phil Johnson Plumbing and Gas North Coast Phoenix (6-7, two draws) third, Triton (5-9, one draw) fourth and the Lawley’s Bakery Dolphins (2-11, three draws).
That means that the semi-finals will pit the Melville Marlins up against Triton, and the City Beach Bears against the North Coast Phoenix for a place in the grand final.
With one round of the season to go, there is a tie in the race for the leading scorer in the Women’s Premier League with the Dolphins’ Alyssa Woodward and the North Coast Phoenix’s Jessica Reynolds both having scored 31 times. However, Woodward’s Dolphins have played their last game.
Shae Fournier (Bears) has scored 22 goals for the season, Sharan Wheelock (Dolphins) 22, Kelly Dayna O’Leary (Bears) 21, Chloe Nella (Marlins) 20 and Petra Kovacs (Triton) 17.
The Round 19 action began at Beatty Park with the Phoenix taking on the Dolphins. It was the Dolphins in their last game of the season that started strongly with the game’s opening three goals.
They then opened up a 5-1 advantage in the second period but the Phoenix then found their groove with the next four goals to tie things up at 5-5. Scores were then tied at 6-apiece at three quarter-time.
The Phoenix got their first lead of the match with the opening two goals of the fourth quarter but with 19 seconds remaining it was the Dolphins who took a 10-9 lead following a goal to Alyssa Woodward.
But then with three seconds left it was North Coast who scored courtesy of Claire Rechichi to secure the 10-10 result.
Jessica Reynolds scored four goals for the Phoenix, Claire Pierce two and Alicia Anderson two. Woodward nailed six goals for the Dolphins to close her season in style.
Then also at Beatty Park, Triton faced the Bears and it was the second draw of the afternoon with both teams locked at 8-8 by the final whistle.
Petra Kovacs scored four goals for Triton with Madison Rigo, Jacqueline Kohli and Kelly Dayna O’Leary all scoring twice for City Beach.
The final round of the 2015-16 Women’s Premier League season will see Triton take on the North Coast Phoenix at Beatty Park and the Melville Marlins face the City Beach Bears at Bicton Pool. Both games begin at 4pm.
