Melville pair named in Women’s Youth World Championships squad

TWO players from Melville Water Polo Club have been selected in the Australian team to participate in the FINA Women’s Youth World Championships in Auckland in December of this year.

Coach Predrag Mihailovic announced his squad this week for the tournament that takes place in New Zealand from 12-18 December this year.

The squad includes two players from Western Australia with both hailing from Melville Water Polo Club – Sofia Chaves and Sofie Pontre.

It is the second straight year that the two girls have been WA’s only representatives in the national squad. Last year they took part in the Australian team in Europe for the tour to play against Hungary, France, China and New Zealand.

Earlier this year both Chaves and Pontre helped the Melville Marlins to the national 18s championship beating the Cronulla Sharks with Chaves scoring three goals and Pontre two in the 11-8 championship victory.

Chaves went on to be named the MVP for the tournament and now the pair will again be key players in the Australian team for the Youth World Championships.

The Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre will host 16 nations from around the world from 12-18 December in the third instalment of this prestigious event.

Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Spain, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa, Russia, U.S.A and hosts New Zealand are all set to line up as part of the Tournament.
