Gary Payne Sunsmart WPWAI Junior Referee of the Year Inaugural Award

Water Polo Western Australia Incorporated in conjunction with the WA Referees Commission are delighted to announce the introduction of an annual award to recognise the best junior referee in WA.

Gary Payne has been involved in Water Polo for over 50 years and has made contributions in a club, country association, Water Polo Board and refereeing. Gary is currently the NWPL referees Delegate and in 2016/17 will be the chair of WPAL referees commission. Water Polo Western Australia is honoured to be able to recognise Gary’s contribution to the sport in WA through the introduction of this award.

The award is voted on by senior water polo referees in WA on a 3-2-1 voting basis and is able to be awarded to any junior referee ( age limit?)

The inaugural Gary Payne Sunsmart WPWAI Junior Referee of the Year has been awarded to GENE LAGDON. Gene is in his second year of refereeing and his progress has been outstanding. In between studies, playing water polo and family Gene referees at Monday night Sunsmart WPWAI juniors and also Wednesday night seniors- quite often after playing himself. Gene is always looking to improve his refereeing and is quick to ask for and take advice on how he is to achieve this.

Water Polo WA Inc is extremely happy to have Gene as our inaugural winner of the Gary Payne Sunsmart WPWAI Junior Referee of the Year and look forward to his continued interest in this facet of the game.
