THE West Australian teams in the OVO Australian Water Polo League hit the road for the first time in 2020 this week with Fremantle and UWA Torpedoes taking on both the Hunter Hurricanes and Queensland Thunder.

After both the Fremantle and UWA teams had the bye in Round 1 of the 2020 OVO AWL season, they got their campaigns underway in Round 2 on Friday night at Bicton Pool in Western Derby contests.

That saw two victories for Fremantle starting with the women’s contest that saw the Marlins prevail 15-6 over the Torpedoes. Then in the men’s clash, the Mariners defeated the Torpedoes 14-8.

OVO AWL Round 2 Recap – WA Teams

Now both WA teams the road this weekend playing four games each starting on Thursday night and going through until Sunday.

The Fremantle Marlins and Mariners make their first stop in Brisbane to take on the Queensland Thunder on Thursday and Friday nights. They will then travel to Newcastle to play the Hunter Hurricanes over Saturday and Sunday to close the round.

The Torpedoes women’s and men’s teams have the opposite fixture starting off playing the Hunter Hurricanes on Thursday and Friday, before then heading to Brisbane to play the Queensland Thunder on Saturday and Sunday.

In terms of the challenges ahead of the women’s teams on the road trip, the Marlins and Torpedoes have to try and hand the Queensland Thunder a hiccup to their hot start to the season while also attempting to keep the Hurricanes winless.

So far in 2020, the Thunder have won five of their six matches to sit atop the standings in the women’s competition after two rounds. They have scored an impressive 73 goals over those six matches while conceding just the 55.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have had a tough start to the season losing all four matches to date with two defeats apiece coming from the Drummoyne Devils and the Queensland Thunder.

The Hurricanes women have scored just the 20 goals across those four matches while conceding 63 so both the Marlins and Torpedoes will like their chances of scoring heavily on their games in Newcastle.

And then in the men’s contests for Fremantle and UWA, they are facing Queensland Thunder and Hunter Hurricanes teams who have had mixed starts to the 2020 season.

The Thunder have already played six matches across the opening two rounds for two wins and four losses. They split their two games at home to the Cronulla Sharks before losing both the Balmain Tigers, and splitting their matches to the Hunter Hurricanes.

Speaking of the Hurricanes, they have won just one of their opening four matches. That lone win was a 13-8 triumph against the Thunder while they lost the other game by one lone goal to Queensland.

Hunter had an especially tough start in the opening round away to Drummoyne losing by a combined 41-15 over the two games to the Devils.

So for the Mariners men, they will be looking to continue their momentum from their derby win over the four games in four days as the Torpedoes look to open their account for 2020.
