Ahead of Perth hosting the FINA Inter-Continental Cup over the next week, the stage will be set by the derby at HBF Stadium on Saturday.

The women’s clash between the Torpedoes and Marlins begins at 2.30pm with the men’s game between UWA and the Mariners to follow from 4.00pm.

That’s on the back of a Round 7 where the two West Australian teams played host to powerful UNSW Wests line-ups across four days.

It all got underway on Thursday night at Bicton Pool with the Killer Whales beating the Marlins 10-9.

Then in the men’s clash, the Mariners prevailed 11-10 against the Magpies.

Friday night saw action come to UWA Aquatic Centre for the first time this season and the UNSW Wests women managed to defeat the Torpedoes 13-10.

Then in the men’s game, the Torpedoes led 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter but the Magpies finished strongly with four goals to one in the last quarter to win 9-7.

Saturday night saw the action return to Bicton Pool and it was another thriller with both teams combining for 23 goals with the Killer Whales just managing to beat the Marlins 12-11.

And in the men’s contest, UNSW Wests asserted its power against Fremantle to come away with a 12-7 victory.

Sunday morning then saw HBF Stadium play host to the last pair of games for the weekend beginning with the women’s match that saw the Killer Whales beat the Torpedoes 11-7.

The Magpies then closed their trip west with a strong performance against the Torpedoes men on Sunday, winning 10-4.

That all sets up the derby contests on Saturday at HBF Stadium.

Coming into the derby, both the Torpedoes and Marlins remain right in the hunt to play finals in 2019.

UWA currently sits in sixth position having won four of 12 matches. Fremantle is seventh with four wins and three losses. That means that the derby takes on extra significance and could play a big part in which team ends up qualifying for the finals come the end of the season.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, the Mariners come into the derby in fourth position having won six of their seven matches for the season to remain in strong contention to not only make the finals, but to be one of the teams to beat.

The Torpedoes are struggling with two wins from 12 games but the young group continues to fight hard and to be more competitive than that win-loss record suggests.

Torpedoes men’s coach Damian Kelly knows that his young group is up against it, but expects them to still take it right up to the more experienced Fremantle line-up.

“It’s a real opportunity in front of a big crowd, I think Elvis will be at the game and the Canadian team will be there to have a look at Devon and Gaelan. It’s just an opportunity and each game is a chance for our group to grow and improve, and say to everyone that we are moving forward,” Kelly said.

“Training has been a little disjointed this week with some of our younger WAIS athletes invited to train with the senior Australian men’s team and Devon and Gaelan haven’t been with us from Tuesday night.

“That just means we are training with a lot more younger players but they are pretty keen to get a go and there’ll be a big crowd at the pool this Saturday. We’re looking forward to it.”
