Fremantle beats UWA ahead of Balmain visit

COMING off Saturday night’s Western Derbies at Bicton Pool were Fremantle scored two wins over the UWA Torpedoes, both West Australian teams host the Balmain Tigers in Round 6 of the OVO Australian Water Polo League season.

For the first time in 2019, the two WA teams will play host to an interstate visitor over four days with the Balmain Tigers coming to Perth.

It gets underway on Thursday night with the Torpedoes hosting the Tigers at HBF Stadium. The women’s contest begins at 6pm followed with the men’s match at 7.30pm.

Then on Friday night it’s action at Bicton Pool with Fremantle playing Balmain. The Marlins play the Tigers in the women’s match from 7pm with the men’s game between the Mariners and Tigers beginning at 8.30pm.

Saturday afternoon will see the action return to HBF Stadium with the Torpedoes playing Balmain with the women’s game to start at 2.30pm with the men’s clash to follow at 4pm.

And then finally on Sunday morning it’s back to Bicton Pool with Fremantle hosting Balmain with the women’s game to start at 10am and the men’s match from 11.30am.

Looking back to Round 5 in the AWL season and it was the first Western Derbies of 2019 held at Bicton Pool on Saturday night.

It started with the women’s clash between the Marlins and Torpedoes, with Fremantle impressing going on to win 11-3.

It kept the Marlins unbeaten start to the season going with Zoe Arancini scoring four goals and Fanny Valyi two. Jamie Oberman, Sam Shead and Raney Remme were the scorers for UWA.

Then in the men’s contest, the Torpedoes kept pace with the Mariners most of the night but in the Fremantle did enough to come away with the 12-8 victory.

Will Mackay, Clancy Neesham, Joel Swift and Jordan Kremers-Taylor all scored two goals each for the Mariners.

Lewis Putt scored three fourth quarter goals for the Torpedoes with Devon Thumwood hitting two in the second term. Debutant Lachie Emanuel also scored in the second quarter.
