Women’s A-Grade – Round 5 Results

ROUND 5 of the 2018-19 Women’s A-Grade competition took place on Saturday with UWA City Beach beating the Melville Marlins while Applecross prevailed over Triton in a contest featuring 28 games.

The afternoon’s action got underway at Bicton Pool with Applecross hosting Triton with Applecross ending up prevailing 15-13 in an exciting, high-scoring affair.

The other Round 5 contest took place at HBF Stadium and that saw UWA City Beach defeat the Melville Marlins 10-8.

The round results leave things tight in the Women’s A-Grade competition with the Marlins and Applecross both having identical records with three wins, a loss and a draw.

Triton and UWA City Beach also possess the same records with three wins and two losses.

It turned out to be quite the spectacular battle between Applecross and Triton at Bicton Pool.

Neither team could open up an advantage through the first half with both scoring two goals each in the first quarter with scores then still all locked up at half-time, 5-5.

The score then advanced to 7-7 in the third quarter before one team scored consecutive goals for the first time, and that was Applecross thanks to two in a minute from Kelly Parks to put her side up 9-7.

They maintained that edge to lead 11-9 at three quarter-time and then went on to win a tremendous match 15-13.

Kelly Parks scored five goals for Applecross to now have 22 over the opening five rounds with Fanny Valyi and Luci Marsh adding four each.

Jamie Oberman scored six goals for Triton, Cathryn Earl two and Olivia Mackell two.

Parks received the three votes, Oberman two and Valyi one.

Then with the other contest held at HBF Stadium, UWA City Beach took on the Melville Marlins and it was another tight affair.

UWA City Beach had managed to open a 4-2 lead by the time Sam Shead scored early in the second quarter but Melville pulled one back by half-time courtesy of Chloe Nella.

The Marlins then scored the last three goals of the third quarter to see them lead 6-5 by three quarter-time. But UWA City Beach produced a tremendous fourth period with five goals to two to run 10-8 victors.

Tayla Walsh scored five goals for UWA City Beach while Madeleine Quinn and Pia Rodgers scored twice each for the Marlins.

Walsh received the three votes, Quinn the two and Shead one.
