THERE remains just the one team with two wins to their name after the opening two rounds of the Women’s A-Grade competition for the 2018-19 season after wins on Saturday for UWA City Beach and Triton while Applecross and the Melville Marlins played out a draw.
It was an exciting second round of action in the Women’s A-Grade competition getting underway on Saturday at Bicton Pool and the two Melville teams went at it in a cracking contest with 22 goals scored between Applecross in the Marlins.
In the end they couldn’t be separated and played out a terrific 11-11 draw.
The second game of the day at Bicton Pool saw Triton remain undefeated beating Dolphins while at HBF Stadium, UWA City Beach defeated the UWA Rangers 9-5.
Following the opening two rounds, that leaves Triton (2-0) atop the Women’s A-Grade standings ahead of the Melville Marlins (1-1-0), Applecross (1-1-0), UWA City Beach (1-1), Dolphins (0-2) and UWA Rangers (0-2).
The first game of Round 2 in the Women’s A-Grade competition saw the battle of the Melville teams at Bicton Pool between Applecross and the Marlins.
Applecross scored with 28 seconds left in the opening quarter thanks to Kelly Parks to take a 3-2 lead into quarter-time but three early goals in the second quarter from the Marlins saw them take a 5-3 advantage.
The Marlins still led 8-6 by half-time but three and-a-half minutes into the second half and Applecross had levelled scored at 8-8.
The Marlins narrowly led 9-8 again by three quarter-time but Applecross levelled things a minute into the fourth with a goal to Kate Abbey-Wardale. The Marlins went back ahead with a goal to Madeleine Quinn but it was answered by Lara Zimmerman.
The Marlins then went ahead once more with a minute left courtesy of Erin Redbond but Applecross immediately responded with a goal to Parks with 43 seconds left with the game finishing tied at 11-11.
Kelly Parks finished with five goals for Applecross, Brooke Pensini two and Lara Zimmerman two. Madeleine Quinn scored four goals for the Marlins, Erin Redbond three and Pia Rodgers two.
The lone game at HBF Stadium in Round 2 of the Women’s A-Grade competition saw UWA City Beach and UWA Rangers lock horns.
Rangers scored first thanks to Tayla Walsh with UWA City Beach responded before quarter-time courtesy of Sydney Poor.
Rangers went ahead to start the second quarter with a goal to Walsh from the penalty spot with City Beach again answering through Holly Rose. Things remained tight and were locked together at 3-3 at half-time.
It was still 4-4 by three quarter-time with a goal apiece in the third quarter but City Beach dominated the last period with five goals to one to come away with the 9-5 victory.
Glenda Morgan scored three goals for UWA City Beach, Pippa Pedley two and Rebecca Liddle two. Tayla Walsh hit four goals for Rangers.
Pedley received the three votes with City Beach ‘keeper Lucy Parker the two and her Rangers counterpart Mia Contessi one.
The second game at Bicton Pool then took place between Dolphins and Triton, with Dolphins hoping for their first win of the season and Triton to remain unbeaten.
Triton started impressively with the only three goals of the first quarter and then continued that advantage with the only goal of the second period thanks to Victoria Brown.
It then became 5-0 to start the second half with a goal to Cathryn Earl. Dolphins did get on the board soon after thanks to Megan Cranley, but Triton continued to dominate and led 9-1 by three quarter-time before going on to win 13-4.
Mille Martino, Cathryn Earl, Tia Nelson and Adelaide Garland all scored two goals each for Triton with Earl awarded the three votes and Martino two. Alyssa Thom from Dolphins received one vote.
