Men’s A-Grade Conferences – Round 1 Results

THE opening round of the 2018-19 Men’s A-Grade season got underway on Saturday with Fremantle Conference victories for the Melville Sharks and Port Colts, and in the UWA Conference for UWA Flotsam and Triton.

The A-Grade Men’s competition for the 2018-19 season will be made up of eight teams, four of each in the Fremantle and UWA Conferences.

The structure of the competition will see a string of three rounds where each team plays one another from their own conference before then taking part in a Cross Conference round where the teams from the Fremantle and UWA Conference will cross over to play one another.

Round 1 got underway on Saturday and at Bicton Pool in the Fremantle Conference, that saw the Melville Sharks defeat Dolphins 11-1 while the Port Colts beat the South Fremantle Bloods 12-11.

The UWA Conference matches took place at HBF Stadium with UWA Flotsam beating UWA City Beach 9-4 and Triton defeating UWA Rangers 12-2.

Things got underway in the Fremantle Conference at Bicton Pool with the Melville Sharks playing host to Dolphins.

The Sharks started strongly with the only two goals of the opening period before the first two also to start the second. Dolphins did get on the board thanks to Taegan Jolly, but the Sharks went into half-time leading 5-1.

They controlled the second half scoring the only six goals to win 11-1.

Joel Swift and James Fannon scored five goals each for the Sharks with Fannon awarded the three votes and Swift the one. Sharks goalkeeper Harry Bruce received two votes.

The second game in the Men’s Round 1 action at Bicton Pool saw the battle of two Melville teams, the Port Colts and South Fremantle Bloods.

The Colts started well with two of the three goals in the first quarter but the Bloods had a big second quarter with five goals to four from their opponents with scores all square 6-6 at the half-time break.

The Bloods continued their momentum in the third quarter too and by three quarter-time looked in control leading 11-9. But the Port Colts weren’t done with and hit the only three goals of the final period to come away with the 12-9 victory in a tremendous contest.

Ollie Girdwood, Tom Prior, Jordan Kremers-Taylor, Michael Altieri and Cody Smith all scored two goals apiece for the Port Colts.

Petar Tomasevic scored four goals for the South Fremantle Bloods with Alistair Bruce, Will McKay and Christian Hoad all adding two each.

Kremers-Taylor received the three votes, McKay two and Girdwood one.

The action in the UWA Conference at HBF Stadium began with UWA City Beach taking on another UWA team, Flotsam.

Flotsam made a dominant start with the only four goals of the opening quarter. City Beach did get on the board to start the second quarter and did add three goals for the period, while Flotsam scored twice to lead 6-3 at half-time.

Flotsam’s lead grew to 7-3 by three quarter-time before they went on to win 9-4.

Nick Hughes and Andrew Ford scored three goals each for Flotsam with Hughes awarded the three votes, Ford the two and Byron Kelly the one from UWA City Beach.

The second Men’s match at HBF Stadium pitted the UWA Rangers against Triton.

Triton made a flying start with the only four goals of the opening quarter, including one to Matt Oberman after just 21 seconds.

They went on to score the only three goals of the second quarter to lead 7-0 at half-time before Rangers did score first to open the second half courtesy of Campbell McAullay.

Triton still went on to lead 9-1 at three quarter-time and to win 12-2 with Rangers getting the last goal of the contest courtesy of Charlie Lennon with 15 seconds remaining.

Matt Oberman finished with four goals for Triton and Lewis Putt two.

Oberman received the three votes, Putt two and Gaby Tebar one.
