Women’s Premier League Round 15 Wrap

THE final round of the Women’s Premier League took place last Saturday in the Fremantle and UWA Conferences with strong victories for Applecross, the North Coast Phoenix and Triton.

There is still one round of Cross Conference fixtures to go in the 2017-18 season before the finals in March, but the last of the games in the Fremantle and UWA Conference took place last Saturday.

In the Fremantle Conference in the two games at Bicton Pool, Applecross defeated Dolphins 18-9 and North Coast Phoenix beat the Melville Marlins 17-9.

Then in the UWA Conference contest at the HBF Stadium outdoor pool, Triton beat the UWA Rangers 20-1.

With the Conference regular season now concluded, that means that in the Fremantle Conference, Applecross finishes on top with seven wins, two draws and three losses.

The Melville Marlins finish second with six wins, two draws and three losses ahead of the North Coast Phoenix who had six wins, one draw and four losses.

Dolphins finish fourth with a draw and nine losses.

And in the UWA Conference, Triton finishes on top with a 6-2 record while the UWA Rangers have a 5-3 record and the UWA City Beach Blues 1-7.

The Round 15 action got underway at Bicton Pool with Applecross taking on Dolphins in a first against last battle in the Fremantle Conference.

It was Dolphins who scored first thanks to Laura Beare and they went up 2-0 with another goal to Nicole Wallace. But three quick goals to Applecross through Kate Abbey-Wardale and suddenly they were in front.

Applecross then held a 4-2 advantage by quarter-time following a goal to Alyssa Thom.

That grew to 5-2 to start the second quarter with a goal to Kelly Parks but Dolphins did well to limit the damage and keep Applecross’ lead to 8-5 by half-time.

Dolphins were right back in the contest when Katie Smith scored to open the second half. When Rachel Lagdon scored soon after they were back within a goal too and it was game on.

But Applecross responded with the last two goals of the third quarter and then with six goals to one in the fourth to take out the 18-9 victory.

Kate Abbey-Wardale scored six goals for Applecross, Kelly Parks four, Jarrah Smith-Taylor three and Amity Reid three.

Rachel Lagdon finished with three goals for Dolphins and Nicole Wallace two.

Abbey-Wardale was awarded the three votes, Reid the two and Lagdon the one.

Then also in the Fremantle Conference, North Coast played Melville with the Phoenix scoring two goals to one in the first quarter.

Things remained tight with four goals to three in the second term for North Coast to lead Melville 6-4 at the change of ends for half-time.

Another five goals to three in the third quarter saw the Phoenix extend their lead and then another six to three in the last saw them come away with the 17-10 win over the Marlins.

Claire Pierce scored four goals for the Phoenix, Catherine Ainsworth three, Gemma Hadley three, Casey Rushforth three and Claire Rechichi two.

Luci Marsh finished with three goals for Melville, Sophie Simpson three and Stella Watson two.

And in the UWA Conference, Triton played the UWA Rangers at HBF Stadium with Triton putting in a dominant performance.

Triton scored four goals to nil in the first quarter and another four to none in the second to lead 8-0 at half-time.

Rangers did find a goal in the third quarter courtesy of Sophie Rasmussen but Triton didn’t let up with five more goals in the third term, and then seven unanswered in the last to run out 20-1 victors.

Amica Hallendorff scored nine goals for Triton, Sam Shead three, Tayla Barbas two and Claire Whitaker two.

Hallendorff received the three votes, Shead two and Jenna Sanders the one.

The final round of Cross Conference action takes place on Saturday March 10. Triton takes on Applecross at Beatty Park while at Bicton Pool, the Melville Marlins face UWA City Beach and the North Coast Phoenix takes on the UWA Rangers.
