SunSmart Junior State League grand final day rundown

IT was SunSmart Junior State League grand final day at HBF Stadium on Sunday as the best young water polo players in Western Australia finished off a supremely successful 2016-17 summer season.

The girls grand finals began with the 14 and under A contest between the UWA City Beach teams. In the end it was Gold who defeated Bears 3-2. Zelma Koka scored two goals for Gold and Harper Phillips two for the Bears.

The 14 and under B grand final saw the Melville Mackerels defeated the North Coast Phoenix 3-2. Charlie Isabella Regan, Niamh Duffy and Elke Ruane were the scorers for Melville. Kyla Stummer scored both goals for North Coast.

Then in the girls 16 and under A grand final, the UWA City Beach Bears defeated Triton 6-4. Glenda Morgan scored two goals for UWA City Beach and Natasha Oberman two for Triton.

The 16 and under B grand final saw the Phantoms Devils down the Newman Nessies 6-2. Tori Cronje and Hannah Sivic scored two goals apiece for Phantoms with Jessica Sandford and Eloise Parnell the scorers for Newman.

And finally in the girls 18 and under grand final, it was the UWA City Beach Bears who defeated the Melville Marlins 8-3 led by rising star Madi Rigo who claimed the league’s fairest and best award.

Rigo scored five goals in the grand final and Riley Davidson two. Sarah Leavy scored twice for Melville.

The boys 14 and under A grand final saw the UWA City Beach Blues defeat the UWA City Beach Bears 8-6. Rory White scored two goals for the Blues with Julian Kyriakou and William Marshall also scoring twice for the Bears.

The boys 14 and under B grand final saw Lawley’s Bakery Dolphins defeat the Newman Orcas 3-0. Harry Dowling, Tom Ristovsky and Jay Tigchelaar were the goal scorers for Dolphins.

The boys 14 and under C grand final was a thrilling contest with the North Coast Phoenix ending up beating Phantoms Ghosts 5-4. Charlie Fountain and Harrison Franke scored two goals each for North Coast with Max Havard finding the goals three times for Phantoms.

The 16 and under A grand final saw the UWA City Beach Blues defeat Triton 8-2. Matthew Murphy and Sam Rowbottam scored two goals each for the Blues. Ethan Blume and Akira Hoshi were the scorers for Triton.

The 16 and under B grand final then saw Dolphins defeat Triton 8-3 with Conor Brogan scoring four goals and Harry Dowling two. Lachlan Pirone, Brendan Murphy and Deacon Barbas scored for Triton.

It was then the battle of the Melville teams in the boys 18 and under grand final with the Sharks beating the Saints 15-5.
