Round 4 Men’s Challenge Cup Wrap

THE Dolphins remained unbeaten in the 2017 Men’s Challenge Cup beating Phantoms in a thriller on Saturday while Barbarians got their second win of the campaign overcoming a slow start to beat Triton.

The Challenge Cup double-header took place on Saturday at Claremont Pool starting with a nail-biter between the Pressed Earth Dolphins and Phantoms.

Dolphins ended up winning 8-7 thanks to the deciding goal from Harry Paterson with 38 seconds remaining on the clock.

The second half of the double-header then saw the Barbarians overcome a four-goal quarter-time deficit to defeat Triton 11-7.

The results leave the Pressed Earth Dolphins on top of the Challenge Cup standings with a perfect 4-0 record after four rounds.

The Barbarians sit second at 2-2 ahead of Phantoms (1-2, one draw) and Triton (0-3, one draw).

Saturday’s Round 4 action got under at Claremont Pool with Phantoms taking on Dolphins.

Dolphins started with the opening goal to James Beare before Phantoms responded through Chris Reynolds.

Dolphins again went in front thanks to a goal to Aden Chrystal and it continued to go goal for goal with Dolphins leading 4-3 by quarter-time.

Phantoms drew level again early in the second term when Scott Chrystal scored. Phantoms went on with the momentum with goals to Aden and Scott Chrystal again before half-time to take a 6-4 advantage.

Phantoms still led against the undefeated Dolphins 7-6 by three quarter-time but Dolphins responded to start the fourth quarter with goals to Harry Paterson to take an 8-7 advantage.

Phantoms drew level through Scott Chrystal with four minutes left before the thrilling finish saw Paterson score with 38 seconds left with a cracking shot not long after Chris Reynolds was ejected for Phantoms.

Paterson ended up scoring three goals for Dolphins, Jeremy Carbone two and Peter Gaunt two. Reynolds, Nick O’Halloran, Scott Chrystal and Aden Chrystal all scored twice each for Phantoms.

Paterson received the three votes for the game, Marko Draksimovic two and Scott Chrystal one.

Then in the second half of the double-header between Triton and the Barbarians, with the Barbarians scoring first courtesy of Lachlan Mackenzie.

But Triton were the ones to grab the early momentum with five consecutive first quarter goals with three coming from Carter Fabling, and one each to Jack Perry and Kalani Ireland.

That saw them lead 5-1 by quarter-time but five minutes into the second quarter and four goals to Barbarians from Harry Paterson, Paterson again, Tibor Seress and Seress once more saw scores tied at 5-5.

The Barbarians then led 6-5 going into half-time following a score to Kieran Bayles with 27 seconds left in the half.

Triton again tied things up to start the second half with a goal to Ireland but the Barbarians now had some confidence up and were able to open up a 10-7 lead by three quarter-time, and to go on and win 11-7.

Seress and Paterson scored three goals apiece for the Barbarians with Bayles adding two. Ireland and Fabling scored three times each for Triton.

After the game, Seress received the three votes, Paterson the two and Ireland the one.
